Sam Smith leaving the Christian Cowan show |
This was a spur-of-the-moment photo that I just stumbled across. I got dinner with a friend and as we were wandering from the UES back down to Midtown we accidentally came across a bunch of people with phones and cameras clearly waiting for someone famous to come out. We stuck around for a few minutes across the street and I caught this first shot.

A couple of days later we had a snowstorm. The snow was gone by lunchtime but it came down in thick, fluffy, snowflakes that made for perfect winter shooting. Unfortunately I was completely unprepared for this shot. I took it from across 10th ave and was unprepared with gear since all I had was a 75mm lens and I was forced to crop in until the pixels that we have here are basically all that was available for this composition. But more importantly I wasn't prepared mentally to take the shot. My boots were chafing my ankles and I was miserable and hungry and I didn't take the time to take in the scene. I'm not sure how much of a difference it would've made in the end since I still would've needed a much longer lens but I think it's still important for me to acknowledge not being ready mentally.
Maybe next time when the stars align again.
